An analysis of the data from the COSMOS randomised trial provides early evidence that taking a daily Centrum Silver multivitamin may help support healthy ageing at the cellular level.
13 March 2026: A new peer-reviewed study published in Nature Medicine, a leading medical journal, shows that taking Haleon’s Centrum Silver may slow biological ageing in older adults1.
The study looked at five DNA-based ‘epigenetic clocks’ to see how a daily multivitamin might influence healthy ageing in healthy older adults2. Compared to the placebo-only group, people in the multivitamin group had slowing in all five clocks, including statistically significant slowing seen in the two clocks that are predictive of mortality. The authors of this study, state that the changes equated to about four months less biological ageing over the course of two years.
The findings come from an analysis of data from the COcoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study (COSMOS), a study designed to evaluate how taking a daily multivitamin may help support healthy ageing in healthy older adults.
With more than 40 years of nutrition research behind it, Centrum is the most clinically studied multivitamin in the world. These findings strengthen this scientific evidence base, marking a meaningful advance in the scientific rigour behind Haleon’s portfolio of category-leading brands. They also represent the first evidence from a large-scale, long-term randomised clinical trial indicating that a daily multivitamin may offer a safe, accessible and affordable option to support healthy ageing at the cellular level.
Carl Haney, Chief Research and Development Officer, Haleon, said: “These important new findings are a powerful example of how Haleon turns world-class science into real competitive advantage. It raises the bar on decades of clinical evidence behind Centrum, strengthening the credibility and trust our brands hold with consumers and healthcare professionals worldwide. It shows how the science behind our brands sets the standard and supports our growth strategy as we aim to reach one billion more consumers globally.”

Notes to Editors
While ‘chronological age’ measures years lived, ‘biological age’ reflects how well the body is functioning at a cellular level and may provide additional insight about health span than chronological age alone. Scientists can assess this using epigenetic clocks, which track tiny, natural changes in DNA that occur over time. In this U.S. based COSMOS study, researchers followed nearly 1,000 generally healthy older adults over two years to examine the effects of the multivitamin on these epigenetic clocks.
In the COSMOS trial, participants were randomised to receive a daily multivitamin and cocoa extract, a daily multivitamin and placebo, cocoa extract and placebo, or placebo only. The findings reported in this analysis relate specifically to the multivitamin intervention.
Participants who took a daily multivitamin showed slower biological ageing across all five epigenetic clocks compared with those taking a placebo – including statistically significant slowing in two clocks linked to mortality. Overall, researchers found these changes equated to around four months less biological ageing over the two-year period.
The study also found the effects were stronger in participants with accelerated biological ageing at the start of the study, suggesting those experiencing faster biological ageing may benefit most. Researchers note that more research is needed to understand how these changes relate to long-term health outcomes.
People worldwide are living longer, with the number of adults aged 60 and over projected to grow from 1 billion in 2020 to 1.4 billion by 20303. As this population grows, many are increasingly taking proactive steps to stay healthy as they age and prioritising prevention, self-care and long-term wellbeing - with everyday nutrition playing a key role.
